Colin Currie & Friends Spotify playlist: Andy Akiho

In the past 12 months or so, I have been fully embracing the music of Andy Akiho. I premiered his Percussion Concerto with the Oregon Symphony (immediately gaining a spot amongst the very top concerti in my repertoire), premiered Aluminous with the JACK Quartet at the 92nd St Y, and added the mighty Pillar IV to my percussion quartet’s books. His music has great vision - sonically, structurally and always his mesmeric rhythmic palette.

In this playlist I bring together some of his latest work with some earlier ‘classics’, alongside music by John Cage and JS Bach, key inspirations. I feel he has a link to the aesthetic of Louis Andriessen with that harmonic and subversive edge, and let’s have some beats in there too, never far away with Andy (thank you Aphex Twin and Dave Maric)!

His contribution to the percussion world is immense and I want to thank him for strengthening and broadening our message.
