On 19th November, Colin Currie will be performing at the Royal Northern College of Music Concert Hall in Manchester alongside the RNCM Wind Orchestra, conducted by Mark Heron, Ann Miller, and Lauren Wasynczuk. The evening will see performances of the compelling world premiere of RNCM student Eden Longson’s Filed on the Interstellar Hard Devices and Archives, and American composer Jennifer Higdon’s Grammy award-winning Percussion Concerto. The latter is a frequently performed favourite of Colin’s. Dedicated to and written for the percussionist himself, the concerto first premiered in 2005, and was jointly commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The programme will also feature Jennifer Jolley’s Lightweg/Lightway, a six-minute piece written for wind ensemble, based on Keith Sonnier’s light installation at Munich Airport. It was commissioned and first performed four years ago to the day by the Georgia Tech Concert Band in Atlanta, conducted by Chaowen Ting. The concert will end with Frank Ticheli’s Symphony No. 2 for concert band. In keeping with the programme’s somewhat extraterrestrial theme, the symphony consists of three movements that represent celestial light - Shooting Stars, the Moon (‘Dreams Under a New Moon’), and the Sun (‘Apollo Unleashed’).
