4. Sinfoniekonzert at the Lübecker Musik-und Kongresshallen

On December 19th and 20th, Colin Currie will be performing in the 4. Sinfoniekonzert at the Lübecker Musik-und Kongresshallen, along with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Lübeck. Conducted by James MacMillan, one of the most prolific composers of our time, the concert will begin with Ottorino Respighi's colorful Trittico Botticelliano. Inspired by the three celebrated paintings of Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) which now hang in the Uffizi Gallery inFlorence, this three-movement piece takes us on a journey through spring, Christmas and the birth of Venus. Following on from this will be one of Macmillan’s most frequently performed contemporary works, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, which is based on the French Advent chorale of the 15th century, an appropriate choice of repertoire for this festive season. MacMillan described this work as a musical exploration of the theological meaning behind the Advent message. To end the concert, after the interval, MacMillan will conduct Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's symphonic masterpiece, the popular "Scottish" Symphony. Although the work itself does not employ folk melodies from Scotland, Bartholdy manages to conjure up a folk-like spirit, saturated in a passion for Gaelic ballads and other pseudo-exoticisms.
