The Colin Currie Group enticed Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank centre earlier this month with their performance of works by Xenakis alongside the JACK Quartet, which was met with praise by the press. The musicians garnered several fine reviews from various sources including Bachtrack, who claimed:
“The evening concert was a blast, an experience of overwhelming proportions that will leave an indelible mark of pure joy on the sizeable crowd which sat enraptured in the Queen Elizabeth Hall.”
The Spectator mirrored this praise, stating:
“This was opera: offensive, intoxicating, jaw-droppingly dumb, exhilaratingly joyous, deafening, possibly the loudest acoustic sound I’d ever encountered”.
The Group played the mighty ‘Plëíades’ for six percussionists and Colin performed ‘Psappha’ for solo percussion, which was awarded particular commendation by Seen and Heard International:
“Colin Currie’s Psappha seemed almost designed to cement our growing sense of structure as fundamental in an emphatic, again quasi-engineered sense to Xenakis’s work. The extraordinary musicianship on show never threatened to take on a life of its own; structure remained paramount.”
