This week, on October 28th, Colin’s latest single, Tromp Miniature, is released on Colin Currie Records. It exhibits Bryce Dessner’s soulful composition which brings to life the power and beauty of the marimba. Commissioned in 2014 by the TROMP International Percussion Competition in Eindhoven, this work for solo marimba became the centre of a unique recording project for Colin, who performed the work at home during lockdown. The composer himself praises Colin’s interpretation of this piece, stating: “Colin’s performance captured on this recording is so wonderfully expressive and soulful, he finds depth and beauty in the piece that I didn’t imagine was possible when I composed it.” Produced and edited by Ian Dearden, and engineered by Colin, this single is the fifth release on his own label, Colin Currie Records, following his first concerto album (HK Gruber: Percussion Concertos – CCR0004), two albums of music by Steve Reich (Steve Reich: Drumming – CCR0001, Colin Currie & Steve Reich Live at Fondation Louis Vuitton – CCR0003) and an album of music for percussion and trumpet together with Currie’s regular collaborator Håkan Hardenberger (The Scene of the Crime – CCR0002).
This new single is released ahead of his 2023 album, which will be recorded by the Colin Currie Group at Abbey Road Studios in November. The group is set to record Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, one of the composer’s most enduring pieces. The album is due for release in spring 2023 and will be available to pre-order from early 2023.
