In 2014 Colin embarked on an extensive solo recital tour, which debuted at Wigmore Hall in London, then took in prestigious venues in Hamburg, Manchester, Minneapolis, Boston and Washington DC. Central to that repertoire was the inclusion of one of the great marimba works of the entire solo literature, perhaps the summit of the solo marimba world - ‘Moi, jeu…’ by Bruno Mantovani.
Such was the inspiration drawn from the study and memorisation of this work, that Colin felt compelled to contact the composer about a potential new work. Equally enamoured with his orchestral music, he decided a concerto for percussion and large symphony orchestra would be the most enticing combination, and thus the groundwork for Bruno’s ‘Allegro Barbaro’ was born.
This vastly ambitious, virtuosic work will now receive its world premiere this very week, at the Monte Carlo Spring Festival followed by a performance in Paris at the Maison de la Radio. The co-commissioning ensemble of the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra will then perform the work with Colin in the autumn of this year. Performances will take place on 31st March and 1st April.
